My Story on Why I Think Every Home Should Have a Copper Sink.

Copper Sink

Back in June 1996, on a warm summery day, the IRA set off a 3000 pound bomb in the middle of Manchester city centre. Warning had spread about an hour before the blast so it had given police time to empty the centre and no one was seriously hurt. However, the bomb caused £700 million damage to the city’s infrastructure and a lot of buildings were badly damaged. One such building was the Royal Exchange theatre, a beautiful Grade II listed building from the Victorian age.

My dad, who was skilled in waste recycling and demolition was commissioned to gut the building and clean out the wreckage of the theatre. My dad was told which rooms to leave and which rooms to completely clear out. In one room, there was complete chaos and the only object to make it in one piece was an old Victorian copper kitchen sink. My Dad was entranced by it and asked the contractors if he could keep it for his own, they agreed he could.

I finished work that evening and was surprised to see my Dad stood on my doorstep holding this big brass sink. I was wondering what on earth he had for me, but when I saw it, I fell in love. My dad was in the middle of helping my rip out my kitchen , and we were both keeping our eyes open for a kitchen sink but I was thinking of a Belfast sink. Belfast double sink As soon as I saw the copper sink, I knew I wanted it.

kitchen sink Even though the sink was ancient, it looked as good as new and was incredibly beautiful. Delicate symmetrical star motifs were impressed into the inside of the bowl, while the top had a delicately rolled rim. It was had been made in France in the late 19th century, and it had aged amazingly well. It was fitted within a few weeks and now has pride of place in my kitchen. I never ever thought to look at copper sinks when it came to designing the interior of my kitchen, but I’m totally obsessed with them now. They’re full of charm and character and my sink creates a big stir whenever guests are around.
