A Review of the J.A. Henckels Brand of Knives
Another cutlery maker with its roots in Solingen, Germany is Zwilling J.A. Henckels. Created in 1731, it has accomplished many “firsts”, including the first stainless steel blades, multi-purpose kitchen shears, forged knives with molded handles and hybrid forged knives. This company is also esteemed as one of the highest quality knife companies in any country. It would seem that thanks to 278 years of existence, Henckels Four Star Knife Sets could be called the sharpest knives in the block.
Product Descriptions
As suggested by Zwillig J.A. Henkles’ logo – a stylized adaptation of the astrological sign of Gemini – each of the Henckels products are designated with the word “Twin” followed by the series name then individual nomenclature. Henkles produces eleven Twin series – 1731, Cermax M66, Select, Cuisine, Four Star II, Pro “S”, Five Star, Four Star, Gourmet, Signature and Grip Parers – and one more product line comprised of cleavers and dicers. Every one of the Henlkes knives continue to be manufactured in Germany, except the Cermax M66 cutlery series which is produced in Japan.
Nearly all Henckels knives are constructed of fine German high-carbon, no-stain steel blades, which are ice-hardened to enhance their sharpness and resistance to stains. This is hardly news since Henckels invented the Friodur ice-hardening system for forged knives. Thus, if you are considering investing in a Henckels knife set, you can be assured of German quality with international standards.
Advantages
The great thing concerning Henckels Four Star Knife Sets is the variety offered to consumers from the enthusiastic amateurs to the world-class chefs. In turn, a number of pocketbooks are served by its low-end knives in the Twin Signature series to the professional-grade knives included in the Twin Cermax M66 series. Fortunately, the grade of materials employed and the construction method used are consistent with every knife made in these factories.
The superior knives included in the Cermax M66 Henckels series cuts like a laser through any ingredients. This set of knives are able to cut, slice, julienne, dice and mince more efficiently than any other knife in the same category. In addition, the weight and balance of these knives are perfect; with the result that professional chefs are increasingly preferring the Cermax M66 rather than, say, nearly equivalent knives over at Wusthoft.
Even its stamped steel knives in the Twin Signature series are fair tradeoffs between price and quality. Obviously, more than two centuries of making knives continues to pay off!
Disadvantages
Particularly in cases where you purchase your knives on the website, make sure that you are being given what you ordered and spent your money on. There are reports about the product descriptions about a Henckels knife set that doesn’t correspond with the items recieved.
Then there is the matter of stature. Because Henckles now produces less expensive knives that rarely but often enough don’t live up to expectations, the other top quality knives suffer because of proximity. This is much like the saying of some bad apples ruining the whole basket.
In conclusion, the choice of a Henckels Knife Set often boils down to two things: your kitchen cutting needs and the size of your bank account. Normally, you will be forced to balance your wishes with your means but with Henckels knives, that choice is made easier.
